Class Less is More

Since I have been in LHSP 230 for about a month now, I wanted to share the aspect of writing that I found to be most surprising and probably the most influential thus far. Today in class, I feel like I had a revelation when Scott gave us the sheet of paper and told us to add detail to the sentences to make them a little more "concrete". In other writing classes I have had in the past, including ones which I wrote a little bit of poetry, the notion of saying more to get out all the thoughts one has is commonly referred to as "good writing". However, after spending some time in this class, I have discovered that writing less and making the statements vivid but at the same time open to interpretations from all angles is really what makes a poem one that is enjoyable. As I revisited some of the previous poems I wrote from the first week of class, I can see that my writing has become a lot simpler but nevertheless clearer. The beauty of poetry is always thought of as the interpretation, yet I believe the true beauty is now in concrete writing.
