I found this poem to be shockingly beautiful in Boruch's use of real life description of the cadavers juxtaposed with her own beliefs about her future and death. My favorite part of the poem is on page 15 when Boruch is describing the medical students taking the heart of a cadaver out of her body and playing with it. It is scary, the way that she watches silently as the students take her apart. She can see her lungs, noticing that they are uneven, but she "still there" breathing. I find this to be powerful imagery because I can picture her scared and alone, not being able to speak, while students are reaching inside of her body.
Monica,
ReplyDeleteDo you feel that the reason that Boruch is able to watch her students take out the heart and play with it is related to her past experiences with love? This may seem like a stretch but I felt a personal connection between her profession and her personal life, in that witnessing the cruel ways her students are playing with the body but not saying anything. I always think of doctors as very calm and not foolish individuals, so watching the students pick out the heart was a little bit of a juxtaposition in my opinion. Again, I feel that there is a deeper meaning in the author's point of view in relation to the poem. What do you think?
